Abstract:
Duplex stainless steel 2205 (DSS 2205) is widely used in aggressive environments due to its balanced austenite-ferrite microstructure, offering high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. However, its surface integrity remains a critical factor governing performance under wear, fatigue, and localized corrosion conditions. In this work, severe shot peening (SSP) is employed as an effective surface modification technique to enhance the mechanical and functional properties of DSS 2205. The SSP process introduces significant plastic deformation, leading to the formation of a refined surface layer characterized by high dislocation density, grain refinement, and the possible development of deformation-induced martensite. These microstructural changes result in substantial surface hardening and the generation of beneficial compressive residual stresses. The combined effects contribute to improved wear resistance and fatigue performance. Furthermore, the influence of SSP on surface integrity is systematically evaluated in terms of microstructure evolution, hardness distribution, and residual stress profiles. The relationship between processing parameters and property enhancement is also discussed. This study demonstrates that SSP is a promising and scalable approach for tailoring the surface properties of DSS 2205 for demanding industrial applications, particularly in marine and oil and gas environments.
