Abstract:
Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) plays an important role in the surface finishing of metals and alloys by converting the intrinsic surface layer of the metal into an oxide with a certain thickness, microstructure, chemical and thermal stability, and mechanical and functional properties. Like other surface conversion-based coating techniques, such as carburization, nitridation, and thermal oxidation, the coating quality of PEO is strongly dependent on the processing conditions and parameters. Rapid progress in the additive manufacturing of metals and alloys in the past decade has increased the requirements for PEO-based surface finish. Recent developments in the PEO process have demonstrated that the characteristics of PEO coatings can also be engineered by incorporating extrinsic elements (other than oxygen) and/or microstructures by engineering the electrolyte and PEO processing strategy. In this chapter, we first introduce the mechanism and coating properties of PEO with a focus on recent advances in PEO techniques. Current issues in PEO coatings are presented based on their applications, and existing solutions are discussed in tandem with the material characterization. By presenting the latest approaches, we attempt to provide readers with a perspective on the current state of PEO and an outlook on its future developments.
