Abstract:
This work reports an aqueous slurry of a dual-binder system for gel-tape casting of alumina sheets, without usage of toxic substances. While ISOBAM acted as the gelling agent, PVA was adopted as a secondary binder to ensure satisfactory flexibility of green tapes. The resulting green tapes were free of surface defects or drying deformation, even the complete casting, gelling, and drying processes were performed in an air atmosphere and at room temperature. For fully dried green tapes, no cracks or fractures could be detected after free bending, and the tapes demonstrated excellent multilayer lamination and secondary shaping performances. With the proposed slurry system, a broad thickness range (30–500 μm) of sintered alumina sheets could be produced. In particular, thin alumina sheets (<100 μm), with a relative density of 98.6 % and homogeneous microstructure were fabricated, demonstrating satisfactory flexibility with a maximum deflection of more than 11 mm in flexural tests.
