Using more accurate information from vehicular-to-everything (V2X) communication technologies, the next-generation urban traffic signal control can be deployed to effectively alleviate traffic congestion. In this paper, we first propose an integrated microscopic traffic simulation platform that extends the functionalities of a typical VISSIM traffic simulator. With our platform, it allows the simulation of common urban traffic applications, such as traffic light optimization and control, V2X communication, dynamic vehicular routing, emulation of driver behaviour. Using the proposed platform, we further study the effectiveness of two main methods in exchanging vehicle status querying and traffic signal light setting in VISSIM, namely, by using COM and DLL approaches. From our evaluations, we found that accessing object with COM interface significantly reduces the average object accessing time to about 24.9% of the typical DLL processing time. Our results highlight the value of adopting COM approach with our integrated simulation platform for urban traffic study.
