Abstract:
There is a recent and growing interest in electrosynthesis that mimics integrated electron transfer chain found in biological systems to realise a cleaner and traceless total synthesis. Besides efficiency and safety, a major advantage of electrochemical processes is the separation of reduction and oxidation events, potentially allowing for simultaneous productive reactions. In the early development, typically only one reaction is intentional, whilst the other serves only a supporting role. Since then, electrosynthesis have been undergoing rapid transformation, facilitated by new electrode materials, membrane technologies, and redox mediators. Today, electrosynthesis is a wide, breathtaking playground for both organic chemists and (largely inorganic) electrochemists to collaborate and create new synthetic strategies. Besides developments in paired electrosynthesis, efforts to balance complexity and sustainability will be covered. This Opinion will also touch on the more established inorganic electrochemical process, where we believe learnings can be implemented to transform organic electrosynthesis further.
