Abstract:
This paper reports the application of an airborne 2D object sensing convex sparse-array PMUT system capable of localizing reflectors within +/- 60° Field-of-View (FoV) in real time. The proposed sensing system consists of a convex PMUT array comprising 5 die pairs with a transmit (TX) chip and an receive (RX) die in each pair. All TX dies are actuated simultaneously towards Plane Wave Imaging using a novel image reconstruction algorithm for object sensing. With each TX-RX pair oriented to cover 30° individually, the system collectively achieves a 120° FoV. The proposed system for airborne object sensing is evaluated experimentally and attains a 30° angular resolution at 7.2 frames per second (FPS) through a Localized Delay-And-Sum (LDAS) approach. This work demonstrates the practical feasibility and provides a proof of concept for a high-speed, wide-FoV embedded ultrasound sensing system operating across a curved interfacial surface, eliminating the need for dynamic beam steering within a simplified system architecture.
