The Nipah Virus (NiV), a highly infectious bat-borne emerging paramyxovirus, is the deadliest virus known for humans and livestock. May 2018, Southern India saw significant nosocomial transmission and a 89% mortality rate, while Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor suffered 265 cases of acute encephalitis with 105 deaths from an outbreak. Now, habitat loss is causing the bats to increasingly fission into urban and agricultural areas, excreting the virus, yet no effective treatment is available to date. As cross-border activities exponentiate, the danger of future pandemics increases, along with the urgency to accelerate long, costly drug discovery processes that presently take 12-15 years for just a single drug.
