Abstract:
Beam steering in the terahertz (THz) regime is essential for applications in next generation wireless communication, imaging, and sensing. Ultrathin profile allows for high conformality and light weight thereby enabling easier and cost-effective system level integration. In this work, we present a reflective phase gradient metasurface for physical thickness of functional layers (reflector-spacer-metasurface) of λ0/5, where λ0 is the free space wavelength of the beam steered frequency. efficient THz beam steering. The metasurface consists of two unit cells with different slot sizes, designed to achieve a π phase shift at 0.547 THz, implementing the concept of 1-bit coding. By arranging the ‘0’ and ‘1’ elements in controlled sequences, we can precisely measure the beam steering angle to be ±49°. The proposed metasurface design can be readily integrated with active elements to achieve reconfigurability and the ultrathin profile offers a potential flexible solution for advanced THz beam control in future wireless networks.
