Abstract:
Yellow biotechnology, synonymous to insect biotechnology, is an emerging field in applied entomology. It encompasses biotechnological approaches to develop insects (or their molecules, cells, organs or associated microorganisms) into products and services facilitating or enabling specific applications in medicine (red biotechnology), agriculture (green biotechnology) and/or industry (white biotechnology) [Vilcinskas, 2013]. This includes the application in drug discovery, preclinical research, plant protection, industrial and food biotechnology. Yellow represents the mix colour of the interfacing red, green and white biotechnology, and the colour of insect haemolymph, the insect analogue to blood.
