Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been widely used in a diverse range of applications due to their attractive advantages such as light weight, flexibility, immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), high sensitivity, and multiplex ability. In this presentation, some of our past and current projects using FBG sensor technology for structural health monitoring (SHM), predictive maintenance and security will be shared. A quick review of using FBG sensors for aerospace applications will be presented. As future of aerospace is autonomous, connected and zero-emission. Hydrogen could be one of the most promising technologies to reduce aviation’s climate impact. Safety requirements are more crucial for commercial aircraft as its hydrogen storage tanks would have to endure approximately 20,000 take-offs and landings and would need to keep the hydrogen in the liquid state for much longer. Hence structural health monitoring of liquid hydrogen (LH2) is essential for hydrogen powered aircraft from the safety perspective. As part of the effort of SHM for hydrogen powered aircrafts, a research topic on “Cryogenic Structural Health Monitoring Using Fiber Optic Sensors” will be proposed.
