Abstract:
Terahertz (THz) radiation, which is located between infrared light and microwave in the light spectrum, has wide applications in industry, medicine, etc. Strong THz radiation has been significant interested in the last decade. We investigate plasma-based strong broadband terahertz source generation with the interaction of high intensity ultrashort laser and solid. THz pulse with electric field of sub GV/cm are generated using laser with intensity of about 1018 W/cm2 [1, 2]. Results from theoretical model and particle-in-cell simulations agree well with experiments, revealing that the THz radiation is coherent transition radiation by hot electrons produced in laser-plasma interaction. Laser-solid plasma interaction produces the largest amount of hot electrons than other proposed methods, which makes it generate the strongest THz radiation so far.
We have studied both planar and nanorod array targets [3], latter of which change the emission direction and increase the number of hot electrons, thus efficiently enhance the intensity and directionality of the THz source.
