Abstract:
Metasurface (MTS) can be characterized in terms of the dispersion properties of guided waves and surface waves. By engineering rich dispersion relation, setting particular boundary conditions, and selecting proper excitation schemes, multiple adjacent resonance modes close to each other could be excited to realize the wideband operation of low-profile MTS antennas. In addition to introducing the operating principle of the typical dispersion-engineered MTS antennas, the recent progress in the dispersion-engineered MTS antenna technology is reviewed. The miniaturization, circularly polarization, beamscanning, and other multifunctional extensions of the MTS antennas are discussed. The development of MTS antennas has not only offered the promising solutions to wideband and low-profile antenna designs but also shown the great potential of MTS in developing innovative antenna technologies.
